How to Get to Zhangjiajie
Zhangjiajie has one airport and one main high-speed rail station. Both are well connected; the only real decision is which route fits your itinerary.
By air — Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG)
Direct flights connect Zhangjiajie with major Chinese cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an and others) plus a growing number of international routes. The airport is only ~10 km from the city centre (Zhangjiajie city, where most hotels are) and about 35–40 minutes from the Wulingyuan entrance.
By high-speed rail
| Route | Approx. time | 2nd-class seat (ref.) |
|---|---|---|
| Changsha South → Zhangjiajie West | ~2 h | ~135–166 RMB |
| Chongqing East → Zhangjiajie West | ~2–3 h | ~181–230 RMB |
| Chengdu → Chongqing → Zhangjiajie West | via Chongqing | combined booking |
Zhangjiajie West Station is the rail gateway (note: there is also an older "Zhangjiajie Station" — make sure your ticket says West). From the West Station, an airport-style shuttle to Wulingyuan costs about 15 RMB / ~40 min; a taxi or private pick-up is more flexible for groups.
Changsha as the hub
Most international travelers route through Changsha: fly into Changsha Huanghua Airport, then take the ~2 h high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West. Plan at least 1.5 hours between the flight landing and the train departure.
Getting around once you arrive
- City → Wulingyuan: about 35–40 km; shuttle buses run from the city coach station, or take a private transfer (~1 h).
- Inside Wulingyuan: the scenic shuttle buses are covered by the 236 RMB 4-day ticket; separate tickets for elevators and cableways.
- City → Tianmen Mountain: ~25 minutes; the cableway station is right at the city edge.
- Wulingyuan ↔ Grand Canyon: ~40 minutes by car.
- Zhangjiajie → Fenghuang Ancient Town: ~3–3.5 h by car, or by high-speed rail + short taxi; most small-group tours make it a relaxed stop on the way out.
